Specifying search conditions

Specification of conditions is described for each search method.

Reference

Enter keywords to the textbox for the normal search. The materials that contain the keywords in their information will be searched.

To specify multiple keywords:

Multiple keywords are supposed to be delimited by space characters. If multiple keywords are input, materials that contain all the keywords in their information will be searched (AND search).

Reference

To select how to match keywords:

Usually, materials that match the specified keywords for a part of their information will be searched (partial match).

Diagonals (/) can be put to the start or end of a keyword. Materials are searched when their information starts with the specified keyword (forward match) or ends with it (backward match).

Reference

Clicking [Category search] shows the page of the category list. From the list, select suitable one for the target materials.

If the selected category has sub categories, trace them to show the list of materials in the corresponding category.

Advanced search enables specification of a combination of conditions. Materials matching all the specified conditions will be searched.

Clicking [Advanced search] shows the page for specifying search conditions. Enter conditions to each textbox in the page.

Selecting the target

For advanced search, the database of the target is supposed to be selected.
Depending on the selected database, annexes or material types are specified further to refine the search result.

Target database

The following database can be selected:

Database Description
Library (you usually use) Books, journals or research papers held in the library (you usually use) are searched.
External services NII catalog database (NACSIS catalog) is specified for searching materials.

Holding library

Materials in the specified annex can be searched.

For example, if you use only a part of annexes since they are distant, the target annexes can be specified.

Supplement

  • The holding library can be specified only when the library (you usually use) is selected as the target database.

Material type

Material types to be searched are specified. Multiple types can be specified at once.

The following material types can be specified, while they vary depending on the settings in the library. Some other types can also be specified depending on the settings.

Type Description
Books Independent publication, generally called “books.”
Journals Serial publication, generally called “journals.”
Journal volumes Particular volumes of journals. This can be specified only when the materials in the library (you usually use) are searched.
Papers Individual articles in books or journals. This can be specified only when the materials in the library (you usually use) are searched.

Japanese/foreign group

Japanese group or foreign one is specified.

Specifying condition parameters

The following lists the condition parameters specified for advanced search. The parameters vary depending on the search targets.

・For Japanese users, conditions can be specified by using hiragana/katakana reading.

  • Depending on the specified targets or material types, some parameters may be meaningless. For example, when journals are to be searched, ISBN is meaningless. Although conditions are specified to such parameters, they will be ignored.
  • The methods of matching depend on the parameters, defined in the system.

Parameters to which multiple conditions can be specified in an input field

When multiple words are accepted, one of “AND,” ”OR” or “NOT” is selected from the list. The words are supposed to be delimited by space characters.

The difference of results obtained by specifying each option among the three is described at Specifying multiple conditions in a textbox.

Supplement

  • If multiple words are entered to a textbox where multiple keywords are not accepted, the words with space characters will be regarded as one condition.
  • If an external service is selected as a target, only “AND” can be selected.
